Algerejen (Caridina multidentata tidligere Caridina japonica) stammer fra Japan og nogle dele af Korea og Taiwan. Den er vel den bedst kendte reje i akvariehobbyen og kan vel nærmest også betegnes som rejen, der startede det hele. Fyren, der for alvor introducerede den i akvariehobbyen er den verdensberømte akvariedesigner Takashi Amano, der begyndte at bruge den i sine aquascapes i 1980'erne. Han opdagede dens fantastiske evne til at spise alger og dermed holde akvarier og planter rene. Senere er den gået hen og blevet inventar i næsten ethvert akvarium takket være dens algespisende evner og toleranthed overfor mange forskellige vandparametre.
Udseendet er ikke helt så spændende som dens evner. Den er klar til gennemsigtig med mørke striber og pletter ned langs siden. Hunnerne bliver en del større end hannerne og vil ofte ses med masser af æg i maven. Desværre kræver larverne brakvand for at overleve og det er altså ikke en helt nem sag at opdrætte denne reje. Det er dog lykkedes for nogle, og søger man lidt på nettet vil man nemt kunne finde fremgangsmetoder til dette.
Det anbefales generelt at have én reje pr. 10 liter vand, hvis man virkelig skal have en god algespisende hær. Man skal dog være opmærksom på ikke at give rejerne alt for gode betingelser rent fodermæssigt, da algerne først vil blive spist når der ikke er andet foder tilbage.
En super god, nem og meget hjælpsom reje. Jeg kunne ikke undvære dem.
