Denne orkide tilhører en familie af klatrende orkideer (genus: Vanilla). Den er hjemhørende i Mexico og er vel mest af alt kendt for sit bidrag til alverdens desserter i form af vaniljekrydderiet. Vanilje stammer nemlig fra denne orkide. Væksten er kraftig, med kraftige rødder som planten bruger til at holde sig fast i vegetationen. Der er dog ikke tale om en snylter. Planten dyrkes i mange tropiske lande og den ynder da også fugtige varme områder. På trods af dette er det faktisk en rigtig god og nem orkide til stuen, hvis man har et sted, der kan rumme den. Den skal helst vandes med regnvand eller demineraliseret vand og ynder en høj luftfugtighed, der kan opnåes ved jævnlige dutchninger. Blomsterne er grøn-gullige og dannes først på voksne individer (over 3 meter lange og oftest over 5 år gamle). Frugterne (frøkapslerne) er op til 25 cm lange og grønne. Det er fra disse at vaniljekrydderiet udvindes. Frugterne modner over en periode på 5 måneder og herefter skal de igennem en lidt kompliceret fermenteringsproces for at kunne udvinde krydderiet. Så det er en omstændig erfære, hvis man ønsker at lave sin egen vanilje.
