Denne palme kaldes også for mexikansk viftepalme og stammer fra de tørre områder i Mexico. Den findes dog nu i mange dele af verdenen. Den minder meget om sin slægtning Washingtonia filifera, men bliver noget større og har ikke de, for W. filifera, kendetegnende tråde imellem bladsegmenterne. Det er en utrolig hårdfør palme, der kan klare adskillige frostgrader, tørke og dårlig jord. Det er derfor også en af de nemmeste palmer overhovedet. Det tilrådes dog at give den en god veldrænet jord og vande rigeligt i løbet af vækstsæsonen.
