Denne art stammer oprindeligt fra Madagascar, men er nu at finde overalt i verdenen. Den er meget karakteristisk med dens korte stamme og store vifte af lange blade. Navnet stammer fra bladenes evne til at opsamle regnvand i bladskederne, hvorved de rejsende kunne slukke deres tørst. Der er faktisk tale om en urt af banan-familien og ikke en egentligt palme.
Meget dekorativ art, der dog kræver lidt plads.
