Kakaotræet er et mindre træ på 4- 8 meter, der har sin oprindelse i det tropiske Amerika. Kakaotræet er kendt for sine store frø, der bruges til kakaopulver og chokolade. Frøkapslerne dannes direkte på stammen og kan veje op til ½ kilo. Kakaotræets naturlige voksested er i Amazonas regnskov, men det er efterhånden blevet spredt til store dele af verdenen. Træet er derfor tilpasset helt specielle forhold, hvilket man skal have i tankerne, hvs man vil gro og dyrke kakaotræet. Planten kræver skygge, temmelig konstante temperaturer (helst mellem 18-28°C grader) og god fugtighed. Det er derfor ikke den nemmeste plante at holde og bare det at få fat i et eksemplar kan være vanskeligt.
Frøformering og dyrkning
Den nemmeste og nærmest eneste måde at anskaffe sig et kakaotræ er ved frø. Her er frøkvaliteten dog meget vigtigt og det skal være helt friske frø før det kan lykkedes. Frøene sås i rig men luftig jord og placeres så varmt (26°C), fugtig og lyst. Hvis forholdene er gunstige og frøet er friskt, vil der gå omkring 10 dage før frøet spirer.
De første par år må planten ikke få direkte sol og trives generelt bedst i lidt skygge. Man skal have i baghovedet at kakaotræet er meget tropisk og derfor ikke bryder sig om kulde eller tørke. Vandingen skal foregå når jorden er ved at tørre ud, men den må aldrig tørre helt ud og heller ikke være soppende våd. En god veldrænet jord er derfor en hjælp. Daglige oversprøjtningen med en forstøver kan bestemt anbefales til at holde fugtigheden oppe.
Jeg har efterhånden haft og groet mit træ i nogle år. Om sommeren står det et beskyttet sted i drivhuset og om vinteren kommer det indenfor i stuen. Begge dele kan være en udfordring. Om sommeren skal man passe på temperaturen og de stærke solstråler. Om vinteren er den tørre luft hård og sprøjtning med forstøver er strengt nødvendig. Et par gange har træet mistet sine planter helt da den er blevet flyttet indenfor. Dette enten pga af skiftet i miljø eller fordi jeg var for langsom til at få den indenfor. Heldigvis er den altid kommet tilbage med nye blade.
Lykkedes det først at anskaffe og dyrke træet er det en glæde og noget gæster vil bide mærke i. Hvem kunne ikke tænke sig sit eget kakaotræ!
