About us

We are a small family of three (now four) who started out living in a small yellow terraced house in Brønshøj (Denmark). Here, we had a small front garden and a small back garden, but even though space was tight, we filled it with all our little projects in the form of exotic plants and an animal here and there. Now we have moved to larger surroundings with high ceilings, as we moved our family and our small shop to Avernakø in February 2023. In addition to us, our family includes a Bernese Mountain Dog, two Angora rabbits, two parrotlets, a South American horned frog, a chameleon, and all sorts of critters, some of which you will also find for sale here in the webshop.

We have a fondness for exotic and rare plants such as carnivorous plants, palms, Strelitzia, banana plants, etc., but a large part of our garden is dedicated to raised beds and a vegetable patch, where we grow vegetables from a self-sufficiency perspective. We believe it is of the utmost importance that we take care of our nature, climate, and biodiversity, both here at home in Denmark and out in the world, to ensure the living conditions for future generations.

Martin is a trained biologist and, as the black sheep of his family, has always been fascinated by exotic plants and animals. A hobby he has been allowed to cultivate and explore the depths of, albeit occasionally with family members observing and shaking their heads. Birgitte is a trained physical geographer, and unlike Martin's family, Birgitte's family has always been close to both animals and nature. Her childhood street was replaced by the childhood meadows, forests, lakes, and pastures, where the fascination for all kinds of animals and plants could unfold freely. The result of this shared fascination is what you find here in our joint hobby business, a Piece of Nature.

Together, we have Arthur Emil, aged 3, who is a happy, energetic, and bubbly boy who gets to be involved in all our projects. For us, it is very important that he grows up in a home where he learns to look after animals and enjoy nature. We want him to open his eyes to how magical a world with other creatures is and how beautiful nature is, with all the adventures waiting just around the corner.

A BIG THANK YOU TO SARAH HEMMINGSEN

A big thank you to Sarah Hemmingsen (Martin's sister), who has been responsible for logos, symbols, designs, and much more for the webshop. Without her, a Piece of Nature would not be what it is today.
