What is a penis plant?

Voodoo lily refers to plants in the genus Amorphophallus, which are among the most remarkable exotic plants. Some species are known for their spectacular flowering, while others are grown primarily for their decorative leaves and distinctive stems.

Konjac, also known as Amorphophallus konjac, is one of the most well-known species and a great example of why this plant group has received so much attention, as the plant has plenty of personality and a very unique look. Another exciting and rare species is
Amorphophallus titanum, which holds the record for the world's largest flower!

A characteristic of Amorphophallus species in particular is that the flowers can smell quite foul. Ironically, this is a pollination strategy. The flowers smell like rotting meat, which attracts carrion flies that then help the flowers with pollination.

Cultivation of Penis Plants

The penis plant is an obvious choice for those who want a plant with personality. Many species follow a clear growth cycle, where the plant shoots up vigorously during the season and then enters a rest/dormancy period. This makes them exciting to grow, because you get a plant that changes significantly over time.

When you choose a penis plant, you get not just a plant, but also a special growing experience. Some varieties are well-suited as collector's plants, while others are ideal if you want to start with something more unusual than classic houseplants. The combination of an exotic appearance, distinct growth, and great variety makes them an exciting group of plants for both beginners and more experienced collectors.
