PRODUCES SEMI-EDIBLE FRUITS
  • Latin name: Musa lawitiensis
  • Danish names: Hutan banan
  • English names: Hutan banana

The Hutan banana is a wild banana from Borneo. It is slender and thin with a red-purple pseudostem (stem) and the leaves are white and waxy on the underside. The fruits are no larger than fingers, yellow and contain small seeds. It is still a fairly new species to grow as an ornamental plant. It grows in tropical regions, typically close to rivers. It therefore requires warmth, light and plenty of water during the growing season.

- The fruits are edible, but it is not recommended.

Seed germination

Lightly scarify the seed with fine sandpaper or a nail file. Then, soak in warm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed starter or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of damp paper towel, which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Please note that it can take up to 6 months for the seeds to germinate!
