- Latin name: Agave americana
- Danish names: Agave, almindelig agave
- English names: Century plant, maguey, American aloe
Agave americana is an iconic and powerful succulent from Mexico and the southern United States. It is known for its impressive size, architectural shape, and extreme drought tolerance. With its large, sculptural rosettes of leaves, it is a classic in both exotic gardens and container plantings.
Appearance and growth
Agave americana forms a large rosette of long, sword-shaped leaves in blue-green to grey-green shades. The leaves have strong, sharp thorns along the edges and a prominent terminal spine.
The plant can reach up to 1–2 meters in height and even wider under favorable conditions. Over time, it forms side shoots (“pups”), which allow for the propagation of the plant.
After many years of growth – often 10–30 years – the plant may flower with a spectacular flower stalk that can reach up to 5–8 meters in height. After flowering, the mother plant unfortunately dies, but typically leaves behind many new side shoots.
Usage
Agave americana is primarily grown as an ornamental plant for its dramatic and architectural expression. It is ideal for pots, greenhouses, conservatories, and exotic outdoor plantings in mild climates.
In its regions of origin, the plant has also been used for fibers, food, and the production of agave-based drinks.
Cultivation and care
- Light: Requires full sun for optimal growth and compact shape.
- Temperature: Thrives best at 15–35 °C. Tolerates brief light frost in dry soil, but should be protected during Danish winters.
- Soil: Very well-drained soil – preferably special soil for cacti.
- Watering: Water sparingly. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
- Fertilizer: Use a mild organic cactus fertilizer during the growing season.
- Overwintering: Keep in a bright, cool, and dry place at a minimum of approx. 5–10 °C.
Note
The leaves have sharp thorns that can be very pointed. Therefore, place the plant with consideration for children and walkways. Agave americana is a majestic and robust succulent that brings structure, strength, and an exotic touch to any plant collection – perfect for those who want a plant with character and presence.
