  • Latin name: Agave americana "Marginata"
  • Danish names: Agave, American agave, striped agave
  • English names: Yellow Margin Century Plant, Variegated Agave, Variegated Century Plant

NOTE: This refers to the "Marginata" variety, sometimes referred to as "variegated", which is the type that develops the recognizable yellow stripes along the leaves.

As the name suggests, this well-known agave originates from Mexico and the USA. However, it is now cultivated in large parts of the world as an ornamental plant and has also spread to the wild in several places. In this country, it is grown in large pots, as it unfortunately cannot withstand frost. Among others, the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen has some large, beautiful specimens standing in front of their palm house. The plants live between 10 and 30 years. Towards the end of their lifespan, a long (up to 9 meters high) flower stalk forms with small yellow flowers. The plant usually dies shortly after flowering, but new plants can sprout from both seeds and side shoots.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of damp kitchen roll, which is then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-drained potting soil, optionally mixed with a little sand or perlite.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably in full sun
- Better too little than too much water
- Fertilize during the growing season with cactus fertilizer
- Tolerates drying out
- Does not tolerate hard frost. Can potentially overwinter in a greenhouse
