Pincushion moss, sometimes called pillow moss, is a great and frequently used moss for the terrarium. It is actually a moss that originates from temperate regions (including Denmark), but due to its adaptability, it is excellently suited for both the terrarium and the windowsill.
In the terrarium, it likes to grow on top of a layer of terrarium soil (or similar). It can also be placed on top of both rocks and wood, from where it will spread. It does not tolerate direct sun and requires some humidity, but can, for example, be used on top of the soil of plants that are kept moist on north-facing windowsills or in the bathroom. For example, Black pepper (Piper nigrum) or Bat flowers (Tacca integrifolia).
It does very well in slightly more humid terrariums for, for example, amphibians, chameleons, and some insects. It is also obvious in the bioactive terrarium and will benefit from both springtails and small isopods, which help keep the moss "clean". Moss helps to retain moisture in the terrarium and is at the same time a good habitat for microorganisms like springtails and small isopods.
Tip: The brown bottom part of the moss can optionally be trimmed shorter before planting. The moss should be "pressed" slightly into the soil when planting.
