Aloe arborescens is a beautiful and vigorous succulent from southern Africa. It is closely related to Aloe vera, but distinguishes itself with its bushy growth and impressive flowering. In nature, it grows on rocky slopes and in dry areas, where it forms dense, branched shrubs.
Appearance and growth
Krantz aloe develops several upright or slightly curved stems, which over time form a dense, bushy plant. The long, narrow leaves are grey-green with small thorns along the edge and grow in rosettes at the ends of the branches.
The plant can reach 1–2 meters in height under good conditions. In winter or early spring, it blooms with spectacular, upright flower spikes in bright red to orange shades, which attract pollinators.
Usage
Aloe arborescens is primarily grown as an ornamental plant for its attractive growth and colorful flowering. It is well-suited for pots, greenhouses, and bright locations in the home. In warm climates, it is also used as a landscape plant in dry gardens.
Cultivation and care
- Light: Thrives best in full sun to very bright, indirect light.
- Temperature: Prefers 15–30 °C and does not tolerate hard frost.
- Soil: Well-drained cactus or succulent soil with sand or gravel.
- Watering: Water moderately. Let the soil dry out between waterings.
- Fertilizer: Use a mild organic succulent fertilizer during the growing season.
- Overwintering: Keep in a bright and relatively dry place at a minimum of approx. 5–10 °C.
Note
Compared to Aloe vera, Aloe arborescens is more vigorous and branched, giving it a bushier and more landscape-oriented appearance. At the same time, it is a very robust and undemanding plant that is easy to keep. Aloe arborescens is an impressive and decorative succulent that combines vigorous growth, beautiful structure, and spectacular flowering – perfect for both collectors and those who want an exotic touch in the home or greenhouse.
