FROST TOLERANT

  • Latin name: Yucca rostrata "Blue Silver"
  • Danish names: Blå sølv-yucca
  • English names: Beaked yucca, Blue Silver yucca

Yucca rostrata 'Blue Silver' is a particularly decorative variety of the iconic desert plant from Texas and Northern Mexico. It is characterized by its narrow, rigid leaves in an intense silver-blue color, which form a perfectly spherical crown on top of a slender, single trunk. The result is a plant with almost sculptural precision that adds a graphic and exotic touch to any garden or collection.

Over time, the plant can develop a trunk of 2–4 meters, but it grows slowly and is therefore well-suited for both container and outdoor cultivation. During the flowering season, it sends up tall flower stalks with white, bell-shaped flowers, which are characteristic of yuccas and very decorative.

Cultivation and requirements:

'Blue Silver' is one of the hardiest yuccas and can withstand temperatures down to around -15 °C when planted in well-drained soil. It thrives best in full sun and requires minimal watering, as it is naturally adapted to dry, rocky desert areas.

In Denmark, it can advantageously be grown outdoors in a sunny and well-drained location, such as in rock gardens or gravel areas. During very wet winters, it may be beneficial to provide the root crown with extra protection against standing water. Alternatively, it is excellently suited for large pots that can be moved to shelter during the winter.

Cultivation from seed:

The seeds are sown in a well-drained soil mix (sand, gravel, and a little organic material) and covered lightly. Keep moist but not wet, at a temperature of approx. 20–25 °C. Germination usually takes 2–6 weeks. The small seedlings are slow-growing but robust, and gradually form the characteristic, narrow blue leaves.

Utility value:

In addition to its ornamental value, Yucca rostrata is known from its native habitat, where parts of the plant have been used for fiber, rope, and food preparation. Today, however, it is primarily grown as one of the most beautiful and sought-after yuccas in ornamental gardening.

Yucca rostrata 'Blue Silver' is a perfect choice for garden owners and collectors who desire a combination of hardiness, sculptural beauty, and an almost architectural touch. A true desert jewel for the Danish climate.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.
