English names: Voodoo lily, bulb-bearing Amorphophallus

Amorphophallus bulbifer, also known as the bulb-bearing Amorphophallus or voodoo lily, is an intriguing tropical plant from Southeast Asia and India. It is distinguished by its ability to produce small bulbils (tiny tubers) in the leaf axils, making it one of the only Amorphophallus species to do so. Conversely, it does not produce small side-tubers in the soil like, for example, Amorphophallus konjac, and is therefore not as easy to propagate. Consequently, it is only rarely seen on the market.
Appearance and growth
The plant develops a single, sturdy stalk with a large, divided leaf that can resemble a small palm tree. The leaf often has a mottled stalk with green and pinkish hues. Unlike other Amorphophallus species, this species produces bulbils in the leaf axils, which fall off and sprout into new plants. When the plant is sufficiently mature, it can develop a spectacular inflorescence with a pink to light purple spathe and a central spadix that emits a characteristic odor to attract pollinators.
Usage
Amorphophallus bulbifer is primarily grown as an ornamental plant due to its unique growth habit and easy propagation. It is a popular plant among collectors of rare and unusual tropical plants.
Cultivation and care
- Light: Thrives best in partial shade or indirect sunlight.
- Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 20-30°C and cannot tolerate frost.
- Soil: Well-drained, humus-rich soil that is kept slightly moist.
- Watering: Keep the soil moist during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging. During the dormant period, reduce watering significantly.
- Fertilizer: During the growing season, fertilize well with a good organic fertilizer.
- Overwintering: When the leaf withers (typically in the autumn), the tuber should be dug up and stored in a dark, dry place at approximately 10°C. When new growth begins to appear, plant the tuber in a pot about 10 cm deep with the growth point facing upward. The bulbils can also be collected and planted to form new plants.
Amorphophallus bulbifer is a fascinating and sought-after plant that combines exotic beauty with a unique propagation method. Perfect for plant collectors and those wishing to explore the exciting world of Amorphophallus species.
