RARE | NOTE: CONCERNS PLANTS

  • Latin name: Amorphophallus maxwellii
  • Danish names: Maxwells amorphophallus
  • English names: Maxwell's Amorphophallus

We have finally succeeded in germinating seeds of this rare Amorphophallus species – an exciting opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts! Amorphophallus maxwellii is a rarely offered species in the aroid world – a smaller, but highly decorative plant with great collector value. The species originates from Southeast Asia, where it grows in humid forest areas and monsoon-influenced regions.

Like many other members of the Araceae family (aroids), A. maxwellii develops a single, marbled stem with an elegant, palm-like leaf. But where larger Amorphophallus species such as konjac and paeoniifolius impress with size, maxwellii wins on its more compact and manageable form – ideal for pots, small greenhouses, or tropical windowsills.

Appearance and growth

The tuber is smaller and flattened, and from it, a single decorative leaf emerges, which can reach 30–60 cm in height. The stem is often spotted in shades of green and pink. When the plant is old enough, it develops a characteristic inflorescence: a dark reddish-brown to purple spathe with a slender spadix, which – true to the genus – emits a short-lived, strong scent to attract pollinators.

Usage

The plant is primarily grown as an ornamental plant and collector's item. Its modest size and exotic appearance make it perfect for those who would like to grow Amorphophallus in more limited space, but still desire that dramatic expression and exciting life cycle.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Partial shade or bright, filtered sun. Avoid direct sun during the hottest hours.

  • Temperature: Thrives at 20–30 °C. Cannot tolerate frost.

  • Soil: Well-drained, humus-rich soil – preferably with coconut coir, perlite, or sand mixed in.

  • Watering: Water regularly during the growing season, but allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the tuber sit in wet soil.

  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced organic fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.

  • Overwintering: When the leaf dies back (usually in the autumn), lift the tuber and store it in a dry, dark place at approx. 10–15 °C.

Amorphophallus maxwellii is an enchanting little species with everything one loves about the genus: exotic beauty, exciting flowering, and an almost magical life cycle – but in a more compact, space-friendly version. A perfect introduction to Amorphophallus, or a beautiful addition to the experienced collector's collection.
