  • Latin name: Argania spinosa
  • Danish names: Argan tree
  • English names: Argan tree

Argania spinosa is an iconic and highly robust tree from southwestern Morocco, where it grows in arid, semi-desert landscapes. The tree is world-famous as the source of the coveted argan oil, which is extracted from the seeds inside the hard-shelled fruits. In the wild, the argan tree plays a crucial role for both the ecosystem and the local population and is today protected as part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve.

The plant develops as a low, broad-crowned, and often thorny tree with small, leathery leaves adapted to drought and intense sun. The yellow to greenish flowers are followed by oval fruits, which contain the hard nut with the oil-rich kernels. The tree is extremely drought-tolerant and can reach a great age.

Cultivation and requirements

Argania spinosa thrives best in full sun and requires:

  • very well-drained, preferably sandy or mineral soil
  • sparse and controlled watering
  • warm and dry conditions

The plant is not frost-tolerant for extended periods. In Denmark, it is best grown as a container plant that can be kept outdoors during the summer months and overwintered in a bright, cool, but frost-free location. The temperature should preferably be kept above 5–8 °C during the winter. Excessive moisture is a greater risk than slight drought.

The argan tree grows slowly and gradually develops its characteristic branched structure.

Growing from seed

Seeds of Argania spinosa have a very hard shell and require pretreatment to germinate. For best results, we recommend:

  • soaking in warm water for 24–48 hours
  • light mechanical scarification (careful sanding of the shell)
  • sowing in a well-drained, sandy soil mix
  • a temperature of 22–30 °C

Germination can take from 2–8 weeks or longer. Uneven germination is normal. Young plants grow slowly at first and spend time establishing a strong root system.

Utility and collector value

Argania spinosa is known for the production of argan oil, which is used both culinarily and in cosmetics. However, oil extraction requires mature trees and significant processing, making it a long-term project in cultivation.

As a plant, the argan tree has great collector value for those interested in drought-tolerant trees, useful plants, and species with cultural significance. Its robust appearance and history make it an exciting addition to any collection.

Argania spinosa is an obvious choice for the patient plant enthusiast who wishes to grow a historically and economically significant tree entirely from seed – with a focus on drought tolerance, character, and long-term development. 🌿

Seed germination

Lightly scarify the seeds with sandpaper and soak them in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours before sowing. Sow them in an airy, well-draining soil mix and cover lightly. Alternatively, you can place the seeds in damp peat moss in a plastic container (the baggie method). Place in a bright, warm location, ideally at 25–30 degrees Celsius. Germination may take a long time.

Childcare

Must be grown in a pot, as it cannot tolerate frost and therefore needs to be moved indoors during the winter. The temperature should preferably not drop below 8 degrees. Requires plenty of direct sunlight. Can potentially be moved outside in the summer, to a place sheltered from the wind.

- Place in a bright location with plenty of light and warmth
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Well-draining, sandy soil
- Needs less water in winter
- Does not like to stand in wet soil
- Should preferably not drop below 8 degrees
