Cephalotus follicularis, also known as the Albany pitcher plant, is a small carnivorous plant famous for its unique, pitcher-shaped traps. These modified, funnel-shaped leaves attract, capture, and digest insects, which the plant uses as a source of nutrients in the otherwise nutrient-poor environment where it grows.

Cephalotus follicularis is endemic to southwestern Australia, specifically around the Albany region. It grows naturally in boggy, sandy, and acidic soil areas, where it has adapted to thrive in a climate with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers.

Care

Although Cephalotus follicularis can be somewhat demanding, it can thrive with the right care. Here are some basic guidelines for looking after it:

  • Placement: The plant thrives best in partial shade to indirect sunlight. Avoid too much direct, strong sun, which can damage the leaves.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, acidic soil mixture (such as our special soil for carnivorous plants), e.g., a mix of sphagnum moss and perlite or sand. Avoid regular potting soil, as it may be too nutrient-rich.
  • Watering: Use only rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water, as the plant is sensitive to minerals in regular tap water. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid letting it become waterlogged. This is easiest done by letting the pot sit in a saucer that is regularly filled with water.
  • Humidity: Cephalotus follicularis prefers high humidity. A terrarium or greenhouse can help maintain appropriate humidity levels.
  • Temperature: The plant thrives best at temperatures between 15-25°C, with slightly cooler temperatures at night. Avoid extreme heat. It also does not tolerate frost.
  • Feeding: Cephalotus follicularis can catch and digest insects on its own. If there are not many insects in the area, you can feed it occasionally with small insects such as flies or mosquitoes. Avoid overfeeding.

With these care tips, Cephalotus follicularis can be a fascinating and beautiful addition to your collection of carnivorous plants.
