TOLERATES LIGHT FROST
  • Latin name: Passiflora mollissima
  • Danish names: Banan passionsfrugt
  • English names: Taxo, banana passionfruit

Banana passionfruits get their name from their yellow, oblong fruits, which are also edible and aromatic. The flowers are long and pink. The plant originates from the Andes Mountains, where it can grow at altitudes of up to 3000 meters above sea level. In warmer climates, the plant grows incredibly fast and can produce hundreds of fruits after just 1-2 years. In Denmark, however, it does not grow quite as large.

Due to its adaptation to growing at high altitudes, the species can tolerate light frost. In freezing temperatures, the plant will die back, only to sprout again when the temperature rises. If you want to try planting it outdoors, winter protection is recommended. Place spruce branches, straw, or other materials around the base of the plant to protect it from the worst of the frost.

In some countries, Passiflora mollissima has become a weed and is considered invasive.

Germination of seeds

Pour lukewarm water over the seeds and then let them soak for 24–48 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Passion fruit seeds can generally take a long time to germinate. You can potentially try to speed up the process by carefully sanding the seeds with a nail file or fine sandpaper before soaking them.
