  • Latin name: Adansonia digitata
  • Danish names: Baobab, Baobabtræ, Afrikansk baobab, abebrødstræ
  • English names: African baobab, baobab, monkey-bread tree, upside-down tree and cream of tartar tree

Adansonia digitata is the most widespread of the baobab trees. It originates from Africa and the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula. It is a long-lived, large tree that most often grows on dry and hot plains. Some individuals are said to be more than 2,000 years old! The tree has traditionally been of great importance as a source of food, liquid, and shelter. Many animals also depend on the baobab tree in the wild.

The tree itself is large (up to 25 meters tall), with a very thick trunk and smooth gray bark. A few massive main branches are formed, from which many smaller branches grow. The flowers are large and white, and the fruits are round, hard, and have a thick shell. The seeds are exceptionally hard and have a thick coating. They can exhibit a very long dormant period, and in the wild, it is believed that a wildfire or an animal eating the seed is required for it to germinate.

All baobab trees are deciduous. They lose their leaves during the dry season and can go up to 8 months without leaves. Therefore, you should definitely not panic if your baobab tree suddenly loses its leaves.

Seed germination

The seeds have a very thick shell that must be broken slightly before sowing. You can either sand them until you reach the white inner shell. You can also try to "crack" the outer shell off using, for example, a pair of pliers. Then, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed-starting mix or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Childcare

The tree requires a pot so it can be brought indoors during winter. Unfortunately, it does not tolerate frost.

- Place in full sun and warmth
- Does not like temperatures below 10 degrees
- Nutrient-rich, well-draining soil
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Generally sparse watering (seedlings, however, prefer a little extra water)
- Very little water and no fertilizer in winter
