RARE | GIANT SEED

  • Latin name: Bismarckia nobilis "Silver"
  • Danish names: Bismarck palm
  • English names: Bismarck palm, silver Bismarck palm

We have finally managed to get these fantastic and giant seeds in stock – a rare opportunity to grow one of the world's most majestic palm trees from seed!

Bismarckia nobilis 'Silver' is an incomparable ornamental palm native to Madagascar – and famous for its impressive, silver-blue fan leaves that can reach up to 3 meters in width. It is a species that exudes grandeur and symmetry, and which is rightfully called one of the most beautiful palms in the world.

This silver-grey variety is particularly sought after for its metallic sheen, which provides an almost sculptural look. Over time, the palm develops a sturdy, upright trunk and a wide, dome-shaped crown. Under ideal conditions, it can reach up to 12 meters in height – but even as a young plant, it is magnificent in both shape and color.

Cultivation and requirements:

Bismarckia nobilis requires plenty of sun and warmth, as well as well-drained, sandy soil. It thrives best in subtropical to tropical climates, but can be overwintered frost-free in large pots in a conservatory or heated greenhouse. As a young plant, it grows relatively slowly, but develops with vigor once the roots have taken hold.

In Denmark, it is best suited for cultivation in large containers, where it can be placed outside in the summer months and overwintered in a bright, dry location at a minimum of 10–12 °C.

Cultivation from seed:

The seeds are among the largest palm seeds to be cultivated and should be sown fresh. Soak them in lukewarm water for 48–72 hours before sowing. Sow in deep pots with well-drained, slightly moist seed-starting soil (e.g., coconut coir and perlite), and keep the temperature stable between 28–32 °C. Germination can take 4–12 weeks and requires patience – but the reward is great.

Utility:

Although Bismarckia nobilis is not edible, it has great decorative and landscaping value. It is used all over the world as a centerpiece in parks, gardens, and resorts – and the silver-colored variety adds a rare, almost futuristic elegance. An absolute dream plant for palm enthusiasts and collectors – and now you have the chance to start it completely from seed. An investment in time, patience, and pure beauty.

Seed germination

It is advantageous to remove the outer shell. Then, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 3-5 days until the shell begins to soften. Change the water every day. Sow the seeds afterwards in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Please note that palm seeds can generally take a long time to germinate.
