  • Latin name: Agave americana "Toliman Blue"
  • Danish names: Blå agave, Tolimans blå agave
  • English names: Blue agave, Toliman blue agave

Agave americana 'Toliman Blue', often called blue agave, is an impressive and hardy succulent originating from Mexico. This variety is particularly sought after for its broad, steel-blue leaves, which form a dramatic, architectural rosette that can reach up to 1.5–2 meters in height and width. It is a true specimen plant, adding a strong, exotic character to any flower bed or container arrangement with its sculptural appearance.

The plant is slow-growing and can live for decades. When it finally blooms—often only after several decades—it sends up an enormous flower spike that can reach up to 8 meters in height. After flowering, the mother plant dies, but it usually produces several offsets that ensure its continued life.

Cultivation and requirements:

'Toliman Blue' thrives best in full sun and very well-drained soil. It is extremely drought-tolerant and is perfectly suited for containers, rock gardens, or as a dramatic centerpiece in a drought-tolerant garden. In Denmark, it should be grown in large containers that can be moved outside in the summer and overwintered in a cool, frost-free location during the winter. It can tolerate temperatures down to -5 °C for short periods if kept completely dry.

Watering should be done sparingly – especially in winter, when the plant should preferably be kept almost dry.

Growing from seeds:

The seeds are sown in a well-drained seed mix (e.g., sand, perlite, and a small amount of seed compost) and kept slightly moist at a temperature of 20–25 °C. You can also benefit from using a good specialty mix for cactus and succulents. Germination usually takes 2–6 weeks. The small sprouts grow slowly at first, but gradually develop into strong, characterful little rosettes.

Utility:

Agaves have been important cultural plants in Mexico for centuries, where different species have been used for purposes such as fiber production, cooking, and fermented beverages. Although 'Toliman Blue' is not the same species used for tequila (Agave tequilana), it has historically had similar uses and is today valued primarily for its ornamental appeal.

Agave americana 'Toliman Blue' is an obvious choice for those wanting a strong, sculptural plant with high ornamental value and minimal maintenance. A true desert classic for the exotic collection.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a fine layer of sand. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Plant in a pot with good soil for cacti and succulents.
