- Latin name: Artocarpus heterophyllus
- Danish names: Brødfrugt, Jackfrugt
- English names: Jackfruit, jack tree, breadfruit
Artocarpus heterophyllus, better known as jackfruit or breadfruit, is a tropical tree in the mulberry family (Moraceae). It is native to South Asia but is now widely cultivated in the tropics for its impressive and nutritious fruits – the largest edible fruits in the plant kingdom!
Appearance and growth
The jackfruit tree can grow up to 15–20 meters tall in the wild, but it can also be kept smaller when grown in large pots or greenhouses. It has glossy, dark green leaves and develops both flowers and fruits directly on the trunk and thick branches – a phenomenon known as cauliflory (similar to the cacao tree).
The fruits can weigh 10–30 kilograms and contain yellow, sweet fruit pods with an aromatic flavor that resembles a blend of banana, mango, and pineapple. Unripe fruits are used as a popular meat substitute in vegetarian dishes due to their fibrous structure.
Use
The jackfruit is a versatile edible plant:
- Unripe fruit: Used in curries and as a meat substitute.
- Ripe fruit: Eaten fresh, dried, or in desserts.
- Seeds: Can be boiled or roasted and used like nuts.
It is rich in fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants and is a staple in many Asian cuisines.
Cultivation and care
- Light: Requires full sun for optimal growth.
- Temperature: Thrives best in tropical conditions (20–35 °C). Cannot tolerate frost.
- Soil: Nutrient-rich, well-draining soil – slightly acidic to neutral.
- Watering: Keep the soil moist but avoid waterlogging. Jackfruit requires regular watering during the growing season.
- Fertilizer: Fertilize regularly with a balanced fruit tree fertilizer to promote growth and fruit set. For example, use our organic fertilizer.
- Placement: In temperate regions, the plant should be grown in a greenhouse, conservatory, or large containers that can be moved indoors during winter.
Artocarpus heterophyllus is a tropical giant with great ornamental value and practical utility. A rare opportunity to grow the world’s largest fruit in your own garden or greenhouse – perfect for exotic plant collectors and fruit enthusiasts.
