HARDY

  • Latin name: Phormium tenax "Variegatum"
  • Danish names: Broget New Zealandsk hør, broget hørlilje
  • English names: Variegated New Zealand flax

Phormium tenax 'Variegatum' is a particularly decorative variety of the classic New Zealand flax from New Zealand. While the species is known for its dramatic, sword-shaped leaves, 'Variegatum' stands out with its beautiful, light stripes running along the leaves. The result is an elegant, architectural clump that adds light and contrast to the garden—while retaining the hardiness and robustness of the original species.

The plant can form strong clumps 1.5–2 meters in height and width, and the upright, sword-shaped leaves provide an exotic and graphic touch. During the flowering season, it sends up long flower stalks with reddish, nectar-rich flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and birds.

Cultivation and requirements:

'Variegatum' thrives best in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established, but appreciates regular watering during the growing season. Like most Phormium varieties, it tolerates short-term temperatures down to about -5 to -10 °C, especially in sheltered positions and well-drained soil.

In mild regions of Denmark, it can be overwintered outdoors with winter protection, but it is usually recommended to grow it in large pots that can be moved into shelter or overwintered frost-free.

- Also available in a non-variegated version

Cultivation from seed:

Seeds of Phormium tenax 'Variegatum' are grown in the same way as the species. They are sown in a light, well-drained soil mix, covered very lightly, and kept at 18–22 °C. Germination typically takes 3–6 weeks. Please be aware, however, that variegated forms are not always stable from seed – many plants may revert to green forms, and the most beautiful variegated specimens are often propagated vegetatively.

Utility:

Phormium tenax 'Variegatum' is primarily an ornamental plant and is used in gardens and landscape design for its architectural expression and decorative stripes. Like the species, it has historically been an important fiber plant in New Zealand, but today it is valued most for its beauty and exotic appeal.

A perfect plant for those who want a combination of hardiness, cultural history, and graphic elegance – a living work of art in the garden or on the patio.

Seed germination

Place the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds directly into moist seed starting soil or cactus soil. The soil must be kept well-moist during germination. After 1 year, they can be planted out. Protect them with straw or spruce branches, if possible, for the first few winters.

Childcare

Can be planted in a pot or directly outdoors.
