NOTE: Unfortunately, we do not yet know the species name of this plant. If anyone has an idea, we would love to hear from you.

Bromelia sp. is a beautiful and easy-to-grow plant from the Bromeliaceae family – the same family as pineapple. It thrives particularly well as a terrarium plant, where its compact size, play of colors, and moisture-loving nature make it perfect for tropical setups with high humidity.

Appearance and growth

The plant grows to about 15 cm in height and forms a dense rosette of stiff, lanceolate leaves that collect water in the center. Under bright light, the leaves take on an intense red color, while under more subdued lighting, they remain green with a faint reddish hue. Bromelia sp. propagates readily with side shoots (pups), which quickly grow into new plants – ideal for those who want a lush, living terrarium plant.

Usage

Suitable for tropical terrariums with amphibians, geckos, anoles, or insects. It collects water in the rosette, which many animals drink from, while contributing to a natural, humid microclimate. With its compact shape and color-changing leaves, it provides structure and color to any terrarium setup.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Thrives best in bright, indirect light. Under strong lighting, the leaves turn red; under lower light conditions, they remain green.
  • Temperature: Ideal at 20–30 °C.
  • Humidity: High (60–90%) – perfect for humid terrariums.
  • Watering: Fill water into the rosette and spray the plant regularly. Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Soil: Airy and well-drained soil, e.g., orchid bark, sphagnum, or mounted on bark/stone. Also grows as an epiphyte.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize very sparingly – a weak solution a couple of times during the growing season is sufficient. If you have animals in the terrarium, you do not need to fertilize.

Bromelia sp. is an ideal terrarium plant for those who want a natural and vibrant environment. It combines color, shape, and function in one – and provides a beautiful, tropical touch with minimal care.
