- Latin name: Cymbopogon citratus
- Danish names: Citrongræs
- English names: Lemongrass, West Indian lemongrass
Cymbopogon citratus is the classic and most widely used lemongrass, known for its fresh, bright citrus scent and indispensable role in Asian cuisine. The species originates from Southeast Asia and is grown today in many parts of the tropical world as both a culinary herb and an ornamental grass. It forms dense clumps of long, narrow, and slightly arching leaves in a fresh green color, and it has a light, elegant appearance despite its potent aroma.
When the leaves or the base of the stem are crushed, the characteristic scent of lemon, lime, and light spice is released. It is mainly the lower, thickened parts of the leaves that are used in cooking, but the leaves are also widely used for tea, soups, and marinades.
Cultivation and requirements:
Cymbopogon citratus thrives best in full sun and in a nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. It prefers warmth and even moisture during the growing season, but does not tolerate standing in waterlogged conditions.
The plant is not frost-tolerant. In Denmark, it is therefore best grown in a pot, so it can be kept outdoors during the summer months and overwintered in a light, frost-free location. The temperature should preferably be kept above 10–12 °C in winter. During cooler periods, growth may stall, but the plant will sprout again when light and warmth return.
Lemongrass can be divided if the plant becomes large, and it thrives well with regular trimming, which promotes dense and fresh growth.
Cultivation from seeds:
The seeds are sown superficially in moist, well-drained seed compost and pressed lightly onto the surface. They germinate best at 20–25 °C and even moisture. Germination typically occurs within 1–3 weeks, but can take significantly longer. The seedlings grow quickly and can be potted on as soon as they are manageable.
Utility value:
Cymbopogon citratus is one of the most widely used culinary herbs in the world. It is used extensively in Thai, Vietnamese, and Indian cooking, in soups, curries, tea, and desserts. In addition, lemongrass is used in natural cosmetics and traditional medicine, where it is valued for its aromatic and refreshing properties.
As a plant, it also has high ornamental value and works beautifully in pots and herb gardens, where its elegant growth is combined with great practical use.
