  • Danish names: Devil's tongue, amorphophallus
  • English names: Henry's Amorphophallus, Voodoo lily

Amorphophallus henryi is an exciting and relatively rarely cultivated species in the aroid family (Araceae). The species originates from China, where it grows in warm, humid forest areas with seasonal rainfall. Like many other Amorphophallus species, it is known for its fascinating growth cycle and its distinctive flowering.

Appearance and growth

The plant develops an underground tuber from which a single, decorative leaf on a marbled stem is formed during the growing season. The leaf is finely divided, giving the plant an almost tropical, palm-like appearance.

When the tuber is large enough, the plant produces a dramatic inflorescence with a dark purple to brownish spathe and an upright spadix. As with many other species in the genus, the flower emits a strong odor during the flowering period to attract pollinating insects.

Amorphophallus henryi generally remains more compact than species such as Amorphophallus titanum and Amorphophallus paeoniifolius, making it more manageable in standard collections and greenhouses.

Difference from other Amorphophallus species

Compared to the very large and robust species, A. henryi has a more elegant and slender growth form. It is particularly valued among collectors for its fine leaf structures and its relatively compact size.

Cultivation and care

  • Light: Thrives best in partial shade or bright, indirect light.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 20–30 °C and cannot tolerate frost.
  • Soil: Humus-rich, well-drained soil with good moisture.
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize regularly with a good organic fertilizer during the growing season to support the growth of the tuber.
  • Overwintering: When the leaf dies back, the tuber should be stored in a dry and dark place at approx. 10–15 °C until the next growth period.

Note

Like many other Amorphophallus species, A. henryi has a distinct dormant period where the plant withdraws energy back into the tuber. This is a natural part of the plant's life cycle and not a sign of poor health.
