RARE

  • Latin name: Beaucarnea stricta
  • Danish names: Elefantfod
  • English names: Slender ponytail palm

Beaucarnea stricta is an unusual and more rarely cultivated species in the ponytail palm genus, native to dry and mountainous regions of Mexico. Compared to the well-known Beaucarnea recurvata, this species has a more upright and rigid growth pattern, narrower leaves, and a more minimalist, almost architectural expression.

The plant forms a heavily swollen stem base (caudex), which functions as a water reservoir and makes it extremely drought-tolerant. The stem is more cylindrical and less pear-shaped than that of the classic ponytail palm, and the leaves are narrow, stiff, and upright with a slightly curved tip. This gives Beaucarnea stricta a calmer and more sculptural appearance that appeals to many collectors.

Cultivation and requirements:

Beaucarnea stricta thrives best in very bright light to full sun and requires a very well-drained, mineral soil, e.g., cactus soil mixed with extra sand or gravel. It is adapted to long periods of drought and tolerates drought far better than overwatering.

In Denmark, it is grown as an indoor plant or in a greenhouse. It does not tolerate frost, but handles cooler temperatures fine as long as it is kept dry. The temperature should preferably not drop below 10–12 °C. In the summer, it can advantageously be kept outdoors in a sunny and rain-protected spot.

Cultivation from seed:

The seeds are sown in a well-drained soil mixture and covered lightly. They germinate best at 22–28 °C and even, moderate humidity. Germination typically takes 2–6 weeks. Seedlings grow slowly at first but develop the characteristic thickened stem base early on.

Utility:

Beaucarnea stricta is grown exclusively as an ornamental plant and is especially appreciated for its clean, upright, and architectural expression. It is perfectly suited for modern interiors, conservatories, and collections of caudex and succulent-like plants, where it requires minimal care and watering.

Beaucarnea stricta is an obvious choice for those who love the ponytail palm but desire a rarer and more austere version with a striking, stylish expression. A robust and rewarding plant with plenty of character.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moderately moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a fine layer of sand. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm spot, preferably between 22 and 28 degrees.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-drained cactus soil, optionally mixed with a little sand or perlite.

- Place in a very bright spot, preferably in full sun
- Allow to dry out between waterings
- Fertilize during the growing season with a little cactus fertilizer
- Does not tolerate frost (minimum 10 degrees)
