Tolerates light frost

  • Latin name: Aloe elegans
  • Danish names: Elegant aloe
  • English names: Elegant aloe

Aloe elegans is an elegant and rarely cultivated aloe species, endemic to Ethiopia, where it grows in rocky highland areas in dry and sunny environments. Its name is well-chosen – this species is distinguished by a graceful and harmonious growth form.

The plant forms an upright rosette of narrow to medium-sized, curved leaves in a grey-green to blue-green shade, often with a light waxy coating and small, evenly spaced thorns along the leaf margins. The compact and symmetrical leaf rosette makes Aloe elegans a decorative plant – both in a pot and planted directly in the ground.

During the flowering season, which typically occurs in early spring, the plant sends up a slender inflorescence with several side branches bearing slender, tubular flowers in bright shades of orange, red, or yellow. The flowers attract pollinating insects and birds, adding life and color to the garden or plant collection.

Aloe elegans thrives in full sun and requires well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant and adapted to periods of water shortage. The plant can tolerate light frost, down to about -2 to -3 °C for short periods, especially if kept dry and sheltered. In colder climates, it is well-suited for pots that can be moved indoors or protected during the winter.

This species is ideal for collectors and plant enthusiasts who want a rare, but easy and decorative aloe with natural grace. Aloe elegans truly lives up to its name – an elegant and undemanding plant.

Seed germination

Sow the seeds directly into damp seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of damp kitchen roll, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil, optionally mixed with a little sand or perlite.
