Chambeyronia macrocarpa is one of the world's most sought-after collector palms and is best known as the "Flame Thrower Palm." The species originates from New Caledonia in the southwestern Pacific, where it grows in humid tropical forests. What has made this palm famous among plant enthusiasts worldwide are its spectacular new leaves, which often emerge in intense red, pink, or copper-colored shades.
Each new leaf creates a dramatic color change that can last for several weeks before the leaf gradually turns green. In larger plants, each new leaf thus becomes an event in itself, and it is precisely this trait that has made the species a classic among palm collectors.
The palm develops a slender trunk and large, elegant pinnate leaves with an exotic and tropical look. Compared to Chambeyronia houailouensis, Chambeyronia macrocarpa is generally the best-known species in cultivation, while both species are considered among the most attractive palms from New Caledonia.

Cultivation and requirements
Chambeyronia macrocarpa thrives best in bright, filtered light or light partial shade and prefers:
- Well-drained but moisture-retentive soil
- Even moisture without being constantly waterlogged
- High humidity
- Warm and stable temperatures
A well-drained palm soil or tropical plant soil with high organic content is ideal. During the growing season, it is beneficial to supplement with a mild dilution of a good organic fertilizer to support healthy growth and beautiful leaves.
The species is not frost-tolerant and in Denmark is best grown as an indoor plant, or in a greenhouse or conservatory. The temperature should ideally be kept stable above 15 °C.
In nature, the palm grows in humid forest environments with protection from larger trees. It therefore does not like drying out and thrives best in environments with high humidity.
Cultivation from seeds
Seeds of Chambeyronia macrocarpa require warmth and patience to germinate optimally. For best results, we recommend:- Soaking in lukewarm water for 1–3 days
- Sowing in a well-drained and slightly moist soil mix
- Temperature of 25–30 °C
- High humidity during germination
Germination can be slow and take from 1–3 months or longer. The young plants grow relatively slowly but gradually develop the characteristic elegant leaves.
Ornamental and collector value
Chambeyronia macrocarpa is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector's palm. It is especially the spectacular red new leaves that have made the species one of the most iconic palms among collectors of exotic plants.
For many palm enthusiasts, this is one of the species you sooner or later want in your collection. The combination of rarity, origin from New Caledonia, and the flaming new leaves gives the plant a status that few other palms can match.
Chambeyronia macrocarpa is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow one of the world's most spectacular palms entirely from seed – an elegant species with a tropical character, iconic red leaves, and very high collector value.
