The flame tree originates from Madagascar but is now found as an ornamental tree in many parts of the world. Many have likely also seen the tree (or its enormous seed pods) on their vacations in the south. It is known especially for its many red flowers in the summer and the large, bean-like seed pods. The seed pods can reach up to 60 cm in length and are incredibly hard (and difficult to open).

The tree itself usually does not grow taller than 10 meters and has large, fern-like leaves.

Seed germination

Stratify the seeds by sanding one end with a little sandpaper. Then, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place them between moist paper towels, which are then put in a plastic bag and placed in a bright spot.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil (preferably mixed with a little sand). It does not like overwatering.
