  • Latin name: Philodendron angustilobum
  • Danish names: Fliget Philodendron, filodendron
  • English names: Narrow-lobed philodendron

Philodendron angustilobum is a beautiful and relatively rare philodendron species native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. It is characterized by its deeply lobed, narrow leaves, which give the plant a light, graphic, and very elegant look – distinct from the more robust and broad-leaved Philodendron species.

The leaves are long, deeply incised, and dark green with a slight sheen. The narrow lobes give the plant an airy appearance, making it particularly suitable for rooms where you want lushness without it feeling heavy. Like many other philodendrons, Philodendron angustilobum is a climbing or semi-climbing species that, in nature, grows up trees using aerial roots.

Cultivation and requirements:

Philodendron angustilobum thrives best in a bright location without direct, harsh sun, but also tolerates light partial shade. It prefers:

  • Airy, well-drained soil, e.g., aroid mix with bark, perlite, and coconut fiber
  • Even moisture during the growing season
  • Good humidity, which promotes larger and more lobed leaves
  • Temperatures above 15 °C
  • Fertilized during the growing season with a good organic fertilizer

The plant cannot tolerate frost and is grown in Denmark as an indoor plant, in a conservatory, plant cabinet, or greenhouse. With a moss pole or other support, it develops more beautifully and gains larger, more characteristic leaves.

Cultivation from seed:

The seeds are sown in a light, moist, and well-drained seed-starting mix and covered only very lightly. They germinate best at 22–28 °C and high humidity. Germination typically takes 2–6 weeks. Young plants initially have more entire leaves, which gradually become more lobed as the plant matures.

Utility:

Philodendron angustilobum is primarily grown as an ornamental plant and is particularly appreciated for its architectural leaf structure and elegant growth. It is an obvious choice for collectors and those who want a lighter and more refined philodendron than the classic, broad-leaved species.

Philodendron angustilobum is an exciting and stylish species that combines tropical lushness with a slimmer and more modern look – perfect for the plant enthusiast seeking something a bit more unusual.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright, warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil. We use our own Aroid mix for this plant.

- Place in a bright spot with indirect sunlight
- Keep moist, but allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Prefers occasional misting with lime-free water
