Sarracenia Philadelphia is a hybrid of somewhat unknown origin. That, however, does not change the fact that it is an incredibly beautiful and easy-to-care-for pitcher plant. Throughout the year, the pitchers change color from green to reddish/orange.
Sarracenia plants are carnivorous, as they catch insects to obtain extra nutrients since they live in very nutrient-poor soil. During the growing season, the funnels fill with water and enzymes. Insects drown in the water and are then slowly broken down, allowing the plants to absorb the nutrients that the insects provide. You can advantageously fill a little water into the pitchers if they are low.
NOTE: In winter, the plants die back, and the withered funnels can be cut off. In spring, the first growth usually consists of large flowers, which start out as completely round spheres on a sturdy stalk. If you want the best for the plant, cut the flowers off as soon as they appear, as it requires a lot of energy to produce them. Conversely, you will miss out on the beautiful flowers.
