Sarracenia plants originate from the northern United States, where they actually grow in temperatures very similar to those in Denmark. Therefore, it is possible to grow pitcher plants outdoors or in an unheated greenhouse. Sarracenia purpurea heterophylla is a low and compact pitcher plant. This species is characterized by its leaves/pitchers being green, unlike Sarracenia purpurea purpurea, which has red pitchers.
In winter, the plants die back and the withered pitchers can be trimmed. In spring, the initial growth usually consists of large flowers that start as completely round spheres on a sturdy stem. The flowers, like the pitchers, are green. If you want what is best for the plant, cut the flowers off as soon as they appear, as it requires a fair amount of energy to produce them.
Sarracenia plants are carnivorous in that they catch insects to obtain extra nutrients, as they live in very nutrient-poor soil. During the growing season, the pitchers fill with water and enzymes. The insects drown in the water and are then slowly broken down, allowing the plants to absorb the nutrients the insects provide. You can advantageously add a little water to the pitchers if they are lacking.
- The seeds are small but germinate easily.
