Sarracenia plants originate from the northern United States, where they actually grow in temperatures very similar to those in Denmark. Therefore, it is also possible to grow pitcher plants outdoors or in an unheated greenhouse. Sarracenia purpurea purpurea is a low-growing and compact pitcher plant that actually grows wild in a few places in Denmark. This species is characterized by its red leaves/pitchers, unlike Sarracenia purpurea heterophylla, which has green pitchers.
In winter, the plants die back and the withered pitchers can be trimmed off. In the spring, the first growth usually consists of the large flowers, which start as perfectly round spheres on a sturdy stem. The flowers are large and red and green. If you want what is best for the plant, trim the flowers off as soon as they appear. It requires quite a lot of energy to produce the flowers.
Sarracenia plants are carnivorous in that they catch insects to gain extra nutrition, as they live in very nutrient-poor soil. During the growing season, the pitchers fill with water and enzymes. The insects drown in the water and are then slowly broken down, allowing the plants to absorb the nutrients the insects provide. You can advantageously add a little water to the pitchers if they are running low.
- The seeds are small but germinate easily
