  • Latin name: Gyna capucina
  • Danish name: Coffee cockroach, pink porcelain cockroach
  • English name: Pink roach, pink porcelain roach

Gyna capucina, often called the "Capuchin Cockroach" or "Coffee Cockroach," originates from the tropical regions of Africa. This cockroach is known for its elegant appearance with a warm brownish color that can vary from light to dark, and which has an almost velvety sheen. Gyna capucina is a beautiful and agile species that loves to climb and explore its environment. Furthermore, the males are capable of flying short distances, making them active and interesting to observe.

It is a rather rare cockroach in the hobby, which is due to the fact that it is not that easy to breed. The substrate needs to be looser and airier than usual. The adult individuals are incredibly beautiful, with their light brown bodies and contrasting dark pronotum. The nymphs are dark brown, almost black, and have light brown spots. They bury themselves in the substrate and are therefore rarely seen.

Care guide for Gyna capucina:

Terrarium:

Size: A terrarium of at least 30 liters is appropriate for a small group of cockroaches. Due to its size, this species requires a slightly larger terrarium. See our article on terrariums for insects.

Substrate: Use a mixture of coconut fiber, peat, or other moisture-retaining substrate. We use our own special soil for terrariums for all our cockroaches. A layer of approx. 5 cm is ideal, as it allows the cockroaches to bury themselves. Our insect food mix can advantageously be placed on top of the substrate.

Decor: Add pieces of bark, leaves, and branches so the cockroaches can hide, as they prefer dark and sheltered areas.

Temperature and Humidity:

Temperature: Keep the terrarium between 24-28°C during the day, and it can drop to around 22°C at night.

Humidity: Humidity should be kept high, around 50-70%. This can be achieved by lightly spraying the terrarium with water a few times a week.

Food:

Feeding: Gyna capucina is more or less omnivorous. They thrive well on vegetables such as carrots, apples, and potatoes, as well as dry food like fish food or dog kibble. Make sure the vegetables are organic! In addition, withered leaves in the substrate for the nymphs are recommended. Remember calcium and minerals.

Water: Ensure that fresh water is always available. Use a shallow dish to avoid drowning accidents. You can also line a corner of the terrarium with damp sphagnum moss, which you ensure is always kept moist.

Cleaning and Maintenance:

Remove any uneaten food residues regularly to avoid mold and unwanted odors.

Add bioactive animals that help keep the terrarium clean. See our article on the bioactive terrarium.

With proper care, Gyna capucina can live for up to 1-2 years in captivity and breed. Its elegant appearance and active behavior will certainly bring life and color to your terrarium. If you are looking for a beautiful and lively cockroach that is easy to keep, the Gyna capucina would be a great choice.
