  • Latin name: Sarracenia minor
  • Danish names: Hættet trompetplante
  • English names: Hooded pitcher plant

Sarracenia minor is a fascinating carnivorous plant from the southeastern United States, where it grows in nutrient-poor bogs and damp savannas. The species is particularly known for its elegant, upright pitcher leaves and the characteristic light "windows" in the upper part of the leaves.

The tubular pitcher leaves act as traps for insects. The translucent patches near the top let light into the trap and are thought to confuse the insects, which, after flying in, find it difficult to find their way out. Eventually, they slide down into the trap, where the plant absorbs the nutrients.

Compared to the robust Sarracenia flava and the more open Sarracenia oreophila, Sarracenia minor has a more closed and hood-shaped trap. The small light patches in the leaves also make it one of the most distinctive species in the genus.

Cultivation and requirements

Sarracenia minor thrives best in full sun and prefers:

  • nutrient-poor and acidic soil
  • constantly moist soil
  • good air circulation

A classic soil mix for carnivorous plants consisting of unfertilized sphagnum peat and sand is ideal. Regular potting soil and fertilizer should be avoided, as the plant naturally grows in very nutrient-poor environments.

Always water with rainwater, demineralized water, or other low-calcium water. The plant can advantageously stand in a saucer with water during the growing season.

Sarracenia minor is relatively hardy and needs a cool winter dormancy to thrive optimally. It can be grown outdoors in Denmark in pots, mini-bogs, or a cold frame if protected from the harshest frost periods. However, it thrives best in greenhouses, which extends the season slightly. This is one of the smaller Sarracenia species and can therefore also be advantageously grown in a terrarium.

Cultivation from seeds

Seeds of Sarracenia minor germinate best after a cold period. For best results, we recommend:

  • cold stratification for 4–8 weeks at refrigerator temperature (we have already done this for you)
  • sowing on the surface of moist soil for carnivorous plants
  • bright growing location
  • temperature of 18–25 °C after stratification

The seeds should not be covered, or only very lightly. Germination typically occurs within 2–8 weeks after the cold treatment.

The young plants grow slowly during the first years but gradually develop their characteristic pitcher leaves.

Utility and collector's value

Sarracenia minor is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector's plant, but also as a terrarium plant. It is especially prized for its elegant traps and the unusual light windows, which distinguish it from most other pitcher plants.

For collectors of North American carnivorous plants, the species is an obvious addition to other exciting species such as Sarracenia oreophila, Sarracenia flava, and Sarracenia leucophylla.

Sarracenia minor is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow an elegant and fascinating carnivorous plant right from seed – a species with beautiful traps, an exciting trapping strategy, and high collector's value.
