Bats, ghosts, and little pumpkins. Here is the entire classic Halloween bunch gathered in one paper cutout.

The small figures have a cozy and playful look, making them perfect for Halloween with children, where it should be a bit spooky without becoming too scary.

Decorate for Halloween

Cut out the small figures and let them spread throughout your home. The bats can hang from branches, the ghosts can pop up on shelves and among plants, while the pumpkins can find a spot on the set Halloween table.

String several of the figures together to make a small garland, or mount them on picks and use them as decorations for cakes and muffins.

The small figures can also be used as unique place cards or combined with real pumpkins, autumn leaves, branches, and candles for a cozy autumn decoration.

Hand-painted Danish paper cutout

The paper cutout is designed by Tall Hat Tales and has a charming hand-painted look, where bats, ghosts, and pumpkins each have their own personality.

The motifs are today inextricably linked to Halloween, but in fact, there are ancient stories hidden behind several of them.

Why do we carve faces into pumpkins?

The glowing pumpkin with a carved face has become the very symbol of Halloween. However, the tradition has its roots on the other side of the Atlantic, and originally, there were no pumpkins at all.

In Ireland and parts of Great Britain, there was a tradition of hollowing out root vegetables, especially turnips, carving faces into them, and placing a candle inside. These lanterns were eventually associated with Halloween and became known as Jack-o'-lanterns.

When many Irish people emigrated to North America in the 19th century, the traditions followed. Here, large orange pumpkins were found in abundance, and they were both larger and much easier to hollow out than the hard turnips.

The pumpkin therefore took over the role, and the orange, glowing face gradually became one of the world's most recognizable symbols of Halloween.

What about the ghosts and the bats?

They don't fit in quite by accident, either.

Halloween has historical connections to ideas about death and the world of the dead. In the old Celtic Samhain tradition, often mentioned as one of the precursors to Halloween, there were concepts of a special transition period between summer and winter, where supernatural beings could come closer to the human world. Later, ideas about spirits and ghosts were mixed with the Christian All Saints' tide.

The bat fits in almost even more naturally. It is active in the dark, hides in gloomy places, and has been surrounded by myths and superstition for centuries. At the same time, there may be a quite practical connection, as large bonfires were part of old autumn celebrations. The bonfires attracted insects, and the insects attracted hunting bats.

Over time, bats, ghosts, and glowing pumpkins became part of the imagery that we today instantly associate with Halloween.
