TOLERATES LIGHT FROST
- Latin name: Chamaedorea radicalis
- Danish names: Dværg bjergpalme, hårdfør chamaedorea
- English names: Hardy bamboo palm, radicalis palm
Chamaedorea radicalis is an elegant and relatively hardy palm from the humid mountain forests of northeastern Mexico. This species is particularly interesting because it combines a tropical appearance with better cold tolerance than many other species in the genus.
The palm develops narrow, dark green, and slightly arched pinnate leaves, which provide a light and elegant appearance. Some plants eventually develop a short trunk, while others remain almost stemless with the leaves growing directly from the base.
Compared to more common species such as Chamaedorea elegans, Chamaedorea radicalis is generally more robust against cool temperatures and is also better suited for outdoor cultivation in mild climates.
Cultivation and requirements
Chamaedorea radicalis thrives best in light shade to partial shade and prefers:
- humus-rich and well-drained soil
- even moisture without being constantly waterlogged
- sheltered and humid conditions
Well-drained palm soil or tropical plant soil with high organic content is ideal. During the growing season, it can be beneficial to supplement with a mild, organic plant fertilizer to support healthy growth and attractive leaves.
The species is relatively cold-tolerant and, once established, can withstand light frost, especially in dry and sheltered soil. In Denmark, it is often grown as a potted plant, but in very sheltered and protected locations, it can also be attempted as an outdoor planting.
It is particularly well-suited for greenhouses, conservatories, woodland gardens, or other places with shelter and high humidity.
Cultivation from seed
Seeds of Chamaedorea radicalis germinate best under warm and humid conditions. For best results, we recommend:
- soaking in lukewarm water for 24–48 hours
- sowing in a well-drained and slightly moist soil mix
- temperature of 24–28 °C
- high humidity during germination
Germination typically occurs within 1–3 months, but can be irregular. The young plants grow slowly at first and develop simple leaves before later producing the characteristic pinnate leaves.
Ornamental and collector value
Chamaedorea radicalis is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector's palm. It is especially popular among palm enthusiasts because it combines an elegant tropical look with a certain degree of cold tolerance.
For collectors, the species is particularly interesting as an alternative to more delicate tropical palms, and it fits well into collections of shade-tolerant and subtropical plants.
Chamaedorea radicalis is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow an elegant and slightly hardier palm from seed – a species with tropical character, beautiful leaves, and high collector value.
