  • Latin name: Carpobrotus chilensis
  • Danish names: Hottentotfigen, chilensk hottentotfigen
  • English names: Sea fig

The sea fig most likely originates from southern Africa, but has now spread to several places in the world. In some places, it has spread at the expense of local flora and is therefore considered invasive. Many are likely familiar with it from travels to Mediterranean countries, where it grows in many places as an ornamental plant.

It is a succulent-like, low-growing plant with thick green stems and leaves. It can extend its stems up to 2 meters, allowing it to spread rapidly. At the same time, it thrives in nutrient-poor, sandy soil and can withstand a fair amount of disturbance. This has made it a popular plant in coastal areas with many people.

The plant produces beautiful, large flowers that can form year-round. The flowers open in the morning and close again in the evening. Both the plant and the fruit are actually edible, but this is not something that is really utilized.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of damp kitchen roll and seal them in a plastic bag. Place in a warm, bright location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with good, well-drained potting soil, optionally mixed with a little sand or perlite.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably in full sun
- Allow to dry out slightly between waterings
- Fertilize during the growing season with a little cactus fertilizer
