- Latin name: Sarracenia leucophylla
- Danish names: White-top pitcher plant, white trumpet plant
- English names: White-top pitcher plant, crimson pitcher plant
Sarracenia leucophylla is considered by many to be the most beautiful of all North American pitcher plants. The species originates from the nutrient-poor bogs of the southeastern United States, where it grows in full sun with constantly moist soil and pure rainwater.
The most distinctive feature of this species is its tall, elegant pitcher leaves with large white areas interwoven with red or green veins. The light areas act as small "windows" that let light into the trap and are thought to confuse insects, which find it difficult to find their way out again once they have flown in. The combination of the white patches and the striking veins makes Sarracenia leucophylla one of the most eye-catching species in the genus.
The species often produces its largest and finest pitcher leaves in late summer and autumn, where they can reach up to a meter in height under optimal conditions. This is precisely why it has become one of the most used species in the breeding of modern Sarracenia hybrids.
If you are interested in pitcher plants, you can also take a look at Sarracenia minor, known for its characteristic light windows, or Sarracenia alata, which impresses with its slender and elegant pitcher leaves. You can also explore our entire collection of carnivorous plant seeds.
Cultivation and requirements
Sarracenia leucophylla thrives best in full sun and prefers:
- Nutrient-poor and acidic soil
- Constantly moist soil
- Good air circulation
- Pure rainwater or demineralized water
A classic soil mix for carnivorous plants is ideal. Regular potting soil and fertilizer should be avoided, as the plant naturally grows in very nutrient-poor environments.
The plant benefits from sitting in a saucer of water throughout the growing season and should be grown in a place with plenty of direct sun to develop the most beautiful colors.
Sarracenia leucophylla is hardy and requires a cool winter dormancy. It can be grown outdoors in Denmark in pots, mini-bogs, or a cold frame if it is protected from the harshest frost periods.
Cultivation from seeds
Seeds of Sarracenia leucophylla germinate best after a cold period. Since we store our seeds at 5 degrees, the seeds are already ready for sowing upon receipt.
- Cold stratification for 4–8 weeks at refrigerator temperature (we have done this)
- Sowing on the surface of moist soil for carnivorous plants
- Bright location
- Temperature of 18–25 °C after cold treatment
The seeds should not be covered, or only very lightly. Germination typically occurs within 2–8 weeks after stratification.
The young plants grow slowly for the first few years, but gradually develop their characteristic trumpet-shaped pitcher leaves.
Utility and collector value
Sarracenia leucophylla is grown primarily as an ornamental and collector's plant. The spectacular white pitcher leaves make it one of the most sought-after species among collectors of North American carnivorous plants.
The species has also had an enormous influence on the breeding of modern hybrids, where its large white patches and elegant growth are often passed on. Many of the most popular Sarracenia hybrids therefore have Sarracenia leucophylla as an important part of their lineage.
Sarracenia leucophylla is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wants to grow one of the world's most beautiful pitcher plants right from seed – a fascinating carnivorous plant with elegant traps, spectacular colors, and high collector value.
