- Latin name: Zanthoxylum rhetsa
- Danish names: Indisk pebertræ, rhetsa-peber (unofficial)
- English names: Indian prickly ash, Rhetsa pepper
Zanthoxylum rhetsa is an aromatic tree from South and Southeast Asia, where it grows in forests and open landscapes in, among other places, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Indonesia. The species belongs to the same genus as Sichuan pepper and Japanese pepper, but differs in its powerful, warm, and distinctly spicy aroma, which is found primarily in the fruit husks, leaves, and bark.
The plant develops as a small to medium-sized tree or a large, often thorny shrub. The leaves are pinnate and highly aromatic when rubbed or crushed. Small, inconspicuous flowers are followed by fruits that open when ripe, revealing dark seeds surrounded by the aromatic fruit husk used as a spice.
Cultivation and requirements
Zanthoxylum rhetsa thrives best in full sun to light partial shade and prefers:
- well-drained but nutrient-rich soil
- consistent moisture during the growing season
- warm and protected conditions
The species is heat-loving and tolerates only very light frost. In Denmark, it is therefore best grown as a potted plant that can stay outdoors during the summer months and be overwintered in a bright, frost-free location. The temperature should preferably be kept above 10–12 °C. The plant tolerates pruning and can be kept compact, which makes it well-suited for container culture.
Cultivation from seed
Seeds of Zanthoxylum rhetsa have the best germination rate after a short cold stratification, which can help break seed dormancy. NOTE: We have already cold-stratified the seeds in advance. For best results, we recommend:
- soaking the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours
- optionally 4–8 weeks of cold stratification
- sowing in a well-drained soil mix
- temperature of 20–25 °C after stratification
Germination can be uneven and take several weeks, which is normal for the genus. Young plants grow steadily and develop both thorns and aromatic leaves early on.
Utility and collector value
Zanthoxylum rhetsa is traditionally used in South Asian cuisine and local medicine. The aromatic fruit husks are used as a spice with a warm, citrusy, and slightly numbing taste, related to Sichuan pepper but often stronger and more rustic in character.
As a plant, it is particularly interesting for collectors of useful plants and exotic spice trees. It combines ornamental value, fragrance, and culinary use and is an exciting alternative to the more well-known Zanthoxylum species.
Zanthoxylum rhetsa is an obvious choice for the curious and patient grower who wishes to cultivate a tropical pepper tree from seed – with botanical character, aromatic depth, and historical application.
