Arachis hypogaea, better known as peanut or groundnut, is a fascinating and useful legume native to South America. Today, it is grown across large parts of the world for its oil- and protein-rich seeds, and it is also an intriguing and decorative plant to grow at home – both for utility and for the experience.

The plant is low and spreading with soft, green leaves and delicate yellow flowers. The truly unique thing about Arachis hypogaea is its ability to set fruit underground: after pollination, the flower stalk pushes itself into the soil, where the seeds – the edible peanuts – develop in small, hard pods. This makes the plant quite special in the vegetable garden.

Peanuts thrive best in warm and sunny environments with light, well-drained, and loose soil, which allows the pods to develop beneath the soil surface. In Denmark, the plant can be grown as an annual in a greenhouse, raised bed, or a large pot – preferably in a warm and protected location. It requires a growing season of about 4–5 months without night frost to successfully produce mature nuts.

Utility value:
The seeds (peanuts) are rich in healthy fatty acids, protein, fiber, and vitamin E and are widely used in cooking – whether as roasted snacks, in peanut butter, Asian dishes, baked goods, or as oil. The plant is also nitrogen-fixing and can thus improve the soil where it is grown.

Arachis hypogaea is an obvious choice for the vegetable gardener who wants to try something different and educational. With its unique underground fruit setting and high nutritional value, it is both fun to follow and rewarding to harvest. An exciting and edible addition to the container garden, greenhouse, or school garden.
