    • Latin name: Adonidia merrillii
    • Danish names: Julepalme
    • English names: Christmas palm, Manila palm

Adonidia merrillii is a beautiful and compact palm, native to the Philippines, where it grows in warm, tropical regions. It is especially known by the name Christmas palm, as it produces bright red fruits during its flowering period which, together with its green foliage, create an appearance reminiscent of Christmas colors, and it also often blooms around Christmas time. The combination of a slender trunk, symmetrical crown, and moderate size makes it one of the most popular ornamental palms in tropical and subtropical gardens worldwide.

The palm develops a single, smooth, light gray trunk topped by a dense crown of elegantly arched, pinnate leaves in a fresh green color. Compared to many other palms, Adonidia merrillii remains relatively low and compact, typically 6–8 meters in nature and significantly smaller in pot culture, making it particularly well-suited for containers and conservatories.

    Cultivation and requirements:

Adonidia merrillii thrives best in full sun to light partial shade and requires well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It prefers warm temperatures and consistent moisture during the growing season, but does not tolerate waterlogged soil.

The palm is not frost-tolerant and will suffer damage at temperatures below approximately 10 °C. In Denmark, it must therefore be grown as a potted plant that can be kept outdoors during the summer months and overwintered in a bright, frost-free location – such as a conservatory, greenhouse, or a bright living room. It thrives best at temperatures above 18 °C.

    Cultivation from seed:

The seeds germinate relatively easily when fresh. They should be sown in an airy, well-drained soil mix and covered lightly. Keep the temperature at 25–30 °C and the soil slightly moist. Germination typically occurs after 4–8 weeks, but can take longer. The young plants grow steadily and form their characteristic feathery leaves early on.

    Utility:

Adonidia merrillii is primarily grown as an ornamental palm and is highly valued for its tidy, symmetrical appearance and its moderate size. It is often used in urban spaces, parks, gardens, and container arrangements where a tropical touch is desired without overly aggressive growth.

With its red fruits and elegant form, the Christmas palm adds an exclusive and classic tropical look that works just as well in private collections as it does in public plantings.

Adonidia merrillii is an obvious choice for anyone wanting a beautiful, easily recognizable, and compact palm – a true tropical classic that is perfectly suited for containers and frost-free environments in more northern climates. Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm spot.

Note that palm seeds can generally take a long time to germinate.
