Ludisia discolor, also known as the jewel orchid, is a unique and distinctive orchid from Southeast Asia. Unlike most orchids, it is primarily grown for its beautiful foliage rather than its flowers. It is therefore particularly popular among collectors and as a terrarium plant, where its dark, velvety foliage truly stands out.
Appearance and growth
The jewel orchid has dark green to almost black leaves with fine, glowing veins in reddish or golden shades. The leaves have a soft, velvety surface, giving the plant an exclusive and decorative appearance.
The plant grows low and creeping, typically reaching 10–20 cm in height. It branches readily and over time forms dense, lush clumps. In winter, it may bloom with slender flower spikes bearing small, white flowers – fine, yet discreet compared to the spectacular foliage.
Usage
Ludisia discolor is ideal as a terrarium plant in tropical setups, where high humidity highlights its beautiful leaves. It is also perfectly suited as a houseplant in pots, where it adds an elegant and unconventional touch compared to classic orchids.
Cultivation and care
- Light: Thrives best in partial shade to low light – avoid direct sun.
- Temperature: Ideally between 18–28 °C.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity (60–90%), but is more tolerant than many other terrarium plants.
- Soil: Light, airy, and well-drained – e.g., a mixture of sphagnum, bark, and light potting soil.
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. Does not tolerate drying out.
- Fertilizer: Fertilize lightly during the growing season with a diluted organic orchid or houseplant fertilizer.
- Propagation: Very easy to propagate by cuttings.
Note
The jewel orchid is one of the most rewarding orchids to grow and requires far less light than classic orchids. It is therefore perfect for both beginners and experienced collectors who want a decorative plant focusing on leaf structure rather than flowers. Ludisia discolor is an elegant and distinct orchid that brings depth, color, and texture into both terrariums and the home – a true jewel among houseplants.
The jewel orchid also works very well as a terrarium plant.
