VERY RARE
- Latin name: Kadsura coccinea "Green"
- Danish names: Kadsura, climbing kadsura (unofficial)
- English names: Kadsura vine, green kadsura
- NOTE: FRESH seeds
Kadsura coccinea is a rare and highly decorative climbing plant from humid forest regions in Southeast Asia, including China, Vietnam, and Laos. The ‘Green’ variety represents the more classic color form of the species and is characterized by its green to greenish-yellow flowers, which provide a more subdued and botanical look compared to the darker ‘Purple’ variety.
The plant is evergreen to semi-evergreen and develops long, twining shoots with glossy, leathery leaves. The flowers have an unusual, almost magnolia-like appearance and sit discreetly among the foliage. After pollination, characteristic compound fruits are formed, which resemble small cones and ripen in shades of red to red-orange. In its native habitat, the fruits are known as part of the so-called “five-flavor fruit” tradition, where the taste is described as complex and multifaceted.
Cultivation and requirements
Kadsura coccinea ‘Green’ thrives best in a bright location with light shade, like that found in forest edge zones. It prefers:
- humus-rich, well-drained, and moisture-retentive soil
- consistent watering during the growing season
- shelter and stable support in the form of a trellis, pergola, or other climbing aid
The species is not fully hardy. In Denmark, it is best grown as a container plant that can stay outdoors during the summer months and be overwintered in a bright, frost-free location. The temperature should preferably be kept above 5–8 °C, especially for young plants.
Cultivation from seeds
The seeds should be sown in a light, humus-rich, and well-drained soil mix and covered lightly. Soaking in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours before sowing can improve germination.
Germination occurs best at 20–25 °C and can be uneven and take several weeks. The young plants grow slowly at first and spend time establishing their root system before the characteristic climbing growth truly begins.
Utility and collector value
Kadsura coccinea has traditional applications in Asian folk medicine, where the fruits and stems are particularly used. The fruits are edible, but the flavor is strong and complex, and they are most often used for their functional properties rather than as a fresh fruit.
As a plant, Kadsura coccinea ‘Green’ is particularly interesting for collectors and plant enthusiasts who want a more botanical and subdued version of the species. It combines elegant foliage, discreet flowers, and unusual fruits in one and the same plant.
Kadsura coccinea ‘Green’ is an obvious choice for the patient grower who wants to follow a rare and different climbing plant from seed – with a natural woodland look and great botanical value.
