  • Latin name: Arundo donax

  • English names: Giant cane, elephant grass, carrizo, arundo, Spanish cane, Colorado river reed, wild cane giant reed

Arundo donax, also known as giant cane, is an impressive perennial grass species native to the Mediterranean region and Asia. The plant can reach a height of up to 6 metres and is known for its slender, bamboo-like stems and broad, light green leaves, which add an exotic and dramatic expression to the garden. In late summer, the plant develops feathery inflorescences, which add further aesthetic appeal.

The utility of giant cane extends far beyond the aesthetic. In many cultures, its strong stems are used to manufacture musical instruments, woven baskets, fences, and roofing materials. Furthermore, the plant has a long tradition as a biofuel, as its rapid growth and high biomass production make it ideal for energy generation. In modern times, it is also being researched as a sustainable crop for paper production and erosion control in vulnerable areas.

Can be grown in Denmark
Giant cane thrives outdoors in Denmark, especially in mild regions, and can withstand temperatures down to around -10 °C if planted in well-drained soil. For extra protection, winter covering is recommended in particularly cold areas. In colder climates, it can also be grown in large pots that can be moved to frost-free locations in winter.

Propagation and seeds
In Denmark, Arundo donax rarely produces viable seeds, which makes it easy to control and prevents it from spreading invasively. Therefore, seeds are also rarely seen for sale. Propagation takes place instead primarily via root shoots or division of the root system. This makes it an environmentally friendly choice for Danish gardens, as it does not threaten the local flora.

With its impressive height, low maintenance, and versatile applications, Arundo donax is an obvious choice for both ornamental gardens and functional landscapes. Its robust nature combined with its many practical uses makes it both a beautiful and useful plant.

Seed germination

Place the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds directly into moist seed starting soil or cactus soil. The soil must be kept well-moist during germination. After 1 year, they can be planted out. It is recommended to protect them with straw or spruce branches for the first few winters.
