- Grow your own coffee!

The Coffea arabica plant is the origin of the arabica coffee we all know. It originally comes from the southern regions of Ethiopia and Yemen, but is of course now found in large parts of the world, where it is grown commercially for its coffee beans. Coffee is also grown from other species of Coffea (including Coffea canephora, or robusta), but Coffea arabica is believed to account for more than 60% of the world's coffee and is said to be the best.

The coffee tree or coffee plant itself is a small, compact, flowering tree. The leaves are opposite each other and are dark green and glossy. It produces small white flowers in long rows. The fruits or berries start off green and then turn red to purple as they ripen. Each berry usually contains 2 seeds, which are the actual coffee beans. To get coffee beans for brewing coffee, the beans undergo quite a bit of processing. You therefore cannot simply sow coffee beans and get coffee trees from them. For that, raw and unprocessed seeds are required.

The coffee tree is also grown as a houseplant, as these conditions suit it well, although it prefers slightly higher humidity.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel, which are then placed in a sealed bag (the baggie method). Place in a bright, warm location.

Childcare

An easy plant for pots and containers. Can tolerate low temperatures but not frost. Must therefore be brought indoors during the winter.

- Place in a bright spot, preferably with some sun
- Prefers some shelter from the wind
- Good, nutrient-rich, slightly acidic, and well-draining soil
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Enjoys misting and slightly higher humidity
- Should not be kept in too hot a place
