  • Latin name: Pancratium canariense
  • Danish names: Kanarisk sølilje
  • English names: Canary sea daffodil, Canary spider lily

Pancratium canariense is a rare and decorative bulbous plant from the Canary Islands, where it grows in dry and rocky areas with mild winters and warm summers. The species is closely related to Pancratium maritimum, but has a more subtropical appearance and broader, softer leaves.

The plant develops long, strap-shaped green leaves and large, elegant white flowers with narrow petals and a characteristic central corona. The flowers are often lightly fragrant and give the plant an exotic and almost orchid-like appearance.

Compared to Pancratium maritimum, which is typically found in sandy coastal areas around the Mediterranean, Pancratium canariense is generally more lush and less tolerant of hard frost.

Cultivation and requirements

Pancratium canariense thrives best in full sun to a very bright location and prefers:

  • very well-drained, preferably sandy or mineral soil
  • moderate watering during the growing season
  • dry conditions during the dormant period

A cactus and succulent soil or other highly well-drained soil is ideal for cultivation. During the growing season, it can be supplemented with a mild, organic fertilizer to support healthy growth and flowering.

The species is not fully hardy in Denmark and is best grown as a potted plant, where the bulb can be overwintered in a bright and frost-free place. It is well-suited for a greenhouse, conservatory, or very sunny windowsills.

Like many Mediterranean and subtropical bulbous plants, it does not like winter moisture, especially at low temperatures.

Cultivation from seed

Seeds of Pancratium canariense germinate best under warm and stable conditions. For best results, we recommend:

  • sowing in a well-drained and slightly moist soil mix
  • only light covering of the seeds
  • a temperature of 20–25 °C
  • keeping the soil slightly moist, but not wet

Germination typically occurs within 2–6 weeks, but it may take longer. The young plants gradually develop small bulbs and narrow leaves and should be grown with good drainage from the start.

Utility and collector's value

Pancratium canariense is primarily grown as an ornamental and collector's plant. It is especially prized for its elegant flowers and its connection to the unique flora of the Canary Islands.

For collectors of Mediterranean and subtropical bulbous plants, the species is an exciting addition to more well-known species such as Pancratium maritimum.

Pancratium canariense is an obvious choice for the plant enthusiast who wishes to grow a rare and elegant flowering plant entirely from seed – a species with an exotic appearance, beautiful flowers, and high collector's value.

Seed germination

Place the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in clean sandy soil or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place them between damp paper towels, which are then placed in a plastic bag and kept in a bright location. They may take a long time to germinate. Flowers after 2-3 years.
