  • Latin name: Cinnamomum verum
  • Danish names: Kanel, ægte kanel
  • English names: Cinnamon, true cinnamon tree and Ceylon cinnamon tree

The cinnamon tree, the tree from which we get our spice cinnamon, is a small evergreen tree that originally comes from Sri Lanka. Today, it is indeed Sri Lanka that produces the majority of the world's cinnamon spice.

The leaves are oblong and dark green, with distinct, light-colored leaf veins. The flowers are small and greenish. The fruits are purple and contain a single seed.

The spice, cinnamon, is harvested from the tree when it is a few years old, and one can continue to harvest for many, many years. Small side branches are removed from the tree and the outer bark is stripped away. The inner bark is then carefully removed and dried in the shade and subsequently in the dark. It is this inner bark that becomes cinnamon.

There are a number of other Cinnamomum species whose bark is also used and referred to as cinnamon. However, it is Cinnamomum verum that is considered the true and best one.

Seed germination

Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Alternatively, you can place the seeds between sheets of moist paper towel (the baggie method) and put them in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm spot.

Childcare

Prefers warmth and humidity. Must be grown in a pot as it does not tolerate frost and therefore must be moved indoors for the winter. Can be moved to a greenhouse in the summer, away from too much direct sun.

- Place in a bright spot with partial sun
- Fertilize mildly during the growing season
- Well-draining (acidic) soil, possibly mixed with sand or perlite
- Needs less water in the winter
- Does not like to dry out
