We are quite fond of cardamom as a spice, and therefore we naturally have a cardamom plant ourselves (though we are still waiting for the first harvest of cardamom seeds). The spice, cardamom, is the seeds of the cardamom plant. The seed pods are dried, and inside are the aromatic cardamom seeds, which can be used either whole or ground.

Cardamom (the true kind) originally hails from southern India, where it grows in the shade of tropical forests. It is now cultivated in many parts of the world, however. Here at home, it actually makes for a very good houseplant, as it requires a constantly high temperature and shade. It can be difficult to get it to flower, though.

Seed germination

Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in moist seed compost or cactus soil. Cover with a thin layer of soil or sand. Alternatively, place the seeds between moist paper towels, which are then placed in a sealed bag. Place in a bright and warm location.

Childcare

Plant in a pot with well-draining potting soil (preferably mixed with a little sand). Repot every one to two years.

- Place in shade
- Water when the top layer of soil is dry
- Fertilize during the growing season
- Can be misted with a little water to increase humidity slightly
- Overwinter at min. 15°C. Water less and do not fertilize
